In just one month, Pantanal records two major fires

The Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul recorded two large fires over the last week. If you add up the devastated areas, the fire has already destroyed more than 30 thousand hectares of the biome, equivalent to the area of around 30 thousand football fields. See the video above.

In the month of January alone, satellites from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) recorded more 310 fires in the Pantanal, a much higher number than the 21 outbreaks recorded in the same period in 2023.

The month of January is considered one of the most important in the Pantanal, which is when the biome begins to flood, as a result of summer rains. Fire generally hits the biome during dry periods, mainly between the months of September and November.

With the increase in the number of fires, this year’s situation is alarming, as highlighted by Lieutenant Colonel of the Fire Department Tatiane Inoue.

“We are not even in the dry season and our garrisons are already working on two large fires. These atmospheric conditions are severe. In Corumbá there is one sun for everyone, which makes life even more difficult for our combatant, who already has the difficulty accessing that land. In Miranda we extinguished that fire, but during the week the smoke remained in that region. So, 2024 will not be easy and our responsibility is to protect our biomes“, said Tatiane.

In Miranda, the flames started on a farm, close to the urban region, and consumed around 30 thousand hectares. A team from the Fire Department began operations on Tuesday night (30) and needed the help of three tractors and 10 employees to control the fire in Miranda.

Serra do Amolar: In the Pantanal em Alerta system, 19 hot spots were identified on Thursday (1st). As determined by the report, the area destroyed by the fire already totals around 2,400 hectares in Serra do Amolar.

Combat: Teams working to fight the fire received reinforcements from an Air-Tractor plane yesterday. The model has the capacity to transport up to 3 thousand liters of water to difficult-to-access areas. See video at the beginning of the article.

As it is one of the most preserved places in the Pantanal, it is only possible to access Serra do Amolar by boat or helicopter. However, access via the river is interrupted due to camalotes and baceiros (floating vegetation that clump together and create small islands along the Paraguay River).

The aircraft is from the Mato Grosso do Sul Environmental Institute (Imasul) and was used on Thursday morning by the Fire Department for a reconnaissance flight in the region. From the overflight, the military will define the most critical locations that need to receive water release.
