For laboratory technician Geraldo Vieira Sarmento, 74 years old, the value of basic items in Boa Vista continues to increase. He believes that the ideal is to do price research, look for promotions and, together with his wife, decide what is really needed for daily consumption at home. He highlights rice and beans as the most expensive items in the basket.

“Boy, we’re going [nos supermercados] and search. Go to the supermarket to see what price is better, more affordable, right? It’s more expensive, everything is expensive. We do little tricks to escape the high prices and go to the cheapest, buy the cheapest, go to another, look for it”, he told g1.

Income committed to food

For the economic advisor of Fecomércio de Roraima, Fábio Martinez, the number shows how much the family income of people from Roraima is committed to basic food items. For him, this ends up reducing the worker’s purchasing power.

“This value is very high and shows precisely the commitment that these food expenses have on the general expenses of a family here earning up to the minimum wage.”

“Nowadays, the population is unable to buy the same thing they bought last year or a month ago, due to the increase in the price of goods. This greatly compromises the purchasing power, especially of those people who live on a bare minimum”, he said.

The Fecomércio advisor also cites a survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) from 2022 that pointed out that Roraima’s salary was compromised by up to 33% with basic food items. This value grew two years later.

“We have the value at that time which represented 33%, we see here that this commitment ended up increasing above the adjustment of the minimum wage, reaching almost 50%. Proportionally, we are talking about the growth in these two years of around of 24%. Which was above the inflation average for that same period”.

For him, all of this affects the financial lives of families in Roraima. Fábio describes living on a minimum wage in the state as “complicated” and, therefore, the ideal thing to do is to search for the best prices.

“A person on minimum wage needs to balance the books, making a lot of price comparisons and checking where there are promotions to be able to purchase the necessary items more economically.”

“Sometimes, it is even necessary to change brands to acquire a cheaper one. This occurs both when purchasing food items and when migrating from some more expensive products to more affordable ones. Generally, this happens when there is an increase in inflation, representing a loss of purchasing power. In other words, people end up migrating from prime meat to second-class meat, in the same way they migrate from beef to chicken”, he explains.

Fábio explains that these exchanges and concessions are necessary to survive on a minimum wage in Boa Vista.
