Roraima has more temples and religious centers than the combined total of educational and health institutions, according to new data from the 2022 Census released this Friday (2) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). They are, 2,100 religious establishments across the state256 more than schools and health units.

IBGE mapped that Roraima has 839 hospitals It is Basic Health Units (UBSs)public and private, and 1,055 educational institutions.

The Census understands as a religious establishment churches, temples, synagogues and templesfor example, of all religions.

The capital Boa Vista is home to the majority of them: 986. It is followed by Rorainópolis and Caracaraí, municipalities located in the south of the state, which have 222 and 148 religious establishments, respectively. (see full below).

Opposite is the municipality of Iracema, also in the south of the state, with 32 churches. The municipalities of São João da Baliza and São Luiz also have the lowest number of temples in the state, both housing 35.

A North region of Brazil is the one with the highest relationship between the number of religious establishments and the total population. According to IBGE, there is 79,650 churches in the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins, which represents an average of 459 for every 100 thousand inhabitants, almost double the value for the country as a whole.

IBGE released, for the first time, all the geographic coordinates and types of buildings that make up the 111 million addresses in Brazil registered during the research. Therefore, in addition to religious establishments, the research also mapped:

  • Private households (houses, apartments);
  • Establishments for other purposes (shops, public and cultural buildings);
  • Agricultural establishments;
  • Buildings under construction;
  • Collective households (hotels, prisons, guesthouses, nursing homes).

Most addresses in Roraima point to houses and apartments. According to the data, the state has 211,965 private homes. To give you an idea, the relationship between the number of households and the total population corresponds to a average of three people for each house or apartment in the state.

Secondly, there are the commercial establishments with “other purposes”, such as commerce, cultural or public buildings. They are 28,134 establishments distributed throughout the state.

Roraima also has 6,529 agricultural establishments. The municipality with the most spaces dedicated to agriculture is Rorainópolis, the second most populous, with 1,349. It is followed by Caracaraíwith 874, and the Singwith 673.
