Brazil’s average annual production of oil and natural gas reached a record of 4.344 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) last year, 11.69% above the previous record, reached in 2022. It was the first time that the national average annual production reached a mark above 4 million boe/d, reported the Monthly Bulletin of Oil and Natural Gas Production for December 2023, released this Friday (2) by the National Petroleum, Natural Gas Agency and Biofuels (ANP).

Records were also recorded in separate oil production, with 3.402 million barrels per day (bbl/d), 12.57% above the 2022 value (3.022 million bbl/d); and natural gas, with 150 million cubic meters per day (m³/d), around 8.7% higher than that observed in the previous year (138 million m³/d).

In the pre-salt region, the average volume produced in 2023 was also the highest ever recorded, with 3.304 million boe/d, corresponding to 75.18% of national production.

December

In December last year, 4.570 million boe/d of oil and natural gas were produced. In isolation, oil production totaled 3.585 million bbl/d, a decrease of 2.5% compared to November 2023 and an increase of 16.6% compared to December of the previous year; and natural gas reached 156.618 million m³/d, a reduction of 3.4% compared to the previous month and showing an expansion of 11.8% compared to the same month in 2022.

Pre-salt production, coming from 150 wells, was 2.742 million bbl/d of oil and 118.34 million m³/d of natural gas, totaling 3.487 million boe/d. According to the ANP, there was a reduction of 2.7% compared to the previous month and an increase of 16.8% compared to the same month in 2022. In December, pre-salt production corresponded to 76.3% of the total produced in Brazil.

In the last month of last year, the use of natural gas was 97.8%, making 51.77 million m³/d of gas available to the market. Burning involved 3.39 million m³/d, a drop compared to the previous month (7.4%) and the same month in 2022 (8.5%).

Offshore fields produced 97.7% of the country’s oil and natural gas. Production occurred in 6,546 wells, 539 offshore and 6,007 onshore. The fields operated by Petrobras, whether in a consortium or not, produced 88% of the oil and natural gas. The fields operated by the state company with exclusive participation (100%) produced 24.7% of both hydrocarbons.

Highlights

In December 2023, the field that produced the most oil and natural gas was Tupi, in the Santos Basin, with an average production of 804.44 thousand bbl/d of oil and 40.01 million m³/d of natural gas. The field with the largest number of producing wells was Estreito, in the Potiguar Basin, with 865 wells. The offshore field with the most producing wells was Tupi, with 60 wells.

The ANP also highlights that the installation with the highest production of oil and natural gas in December was the FPSO Guanabara, in Campo de Mero, which produced 179,380 bbl/d of oil and 11.63 million m³/d of gas .
