— He’s a hoarder. He likes to pick up things from the street and the trash. He keeps collecting cans, bottles, everything he finds. He puts everything away and I throw it away again soon after. I don’t know what use the vase would have. He said the other man asked him to keep it. My husband is sick and takes prescription medication. He even receives medical treatment at a family clinic. Just over a month ago he underwent hernia surgery. He is illiterate, cannot read or write and lives off a salary. We are embarrassed. He’s not like that. The whole neighborhood likes him a lot. Our family is devastated by everything that happened — said Jane Cordeiro, the elderly man’s wife.
