RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – Average Brazilian oil production reached a record of 3.402 million barrels per day in 2023, an increase of 12.57% compared to 2022, after the installation of four new platforms by Petrobras in the Santos and Campos basins, showed data from regulator ANP this Friday.

Natural gas extraction, in turn, reached a record of 150 million cubic meters per day (m³/d) last year, around 8.7% higher than the previous year.

Adding the production of oil and natural gas, Brazil produced an average volume of 4.344 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), 11.69% above the previous record, reached in 2022, the data showed.

The ANP noted, in a report, that it was the first time that the national average annual production reached a mark above 4 million boe/d.

Of the total amount, the pre-salt was responsible for 3.304 million boe/d, which represented approximately 75.18% of national production, said the ANP.

In 2023, Petrobras as operator began production on the FPSO type platforms Almirante Barroso, Anna Nery, Anita Garibaldi and Sepetiba.

Previously, the Brazilian state oil company also highlighted that the maximum oil production capacities of the P-71 platforms, in the Itapu field, the FPSO Guanabara, in the Mero field and the FPSO Almirante Barroso, in the Búzios field, were reached. The latter, which occurred in October 2023, less than five months after the first oil, a record in the pre-salt.

DECEMBER

In the last month of the year, oil production averaged 3.585 million bpd, a drop of 2.5% compared to November 2023 and an increase of 16.6% compared to December of the previous year.

Petrobras, as a concessionaire, produced a total of 2.29 million bpd in December, an increase of 16.6% compared to the same month in 2022, according to ANP data.

Anglo-Dutch Shell, the country’s second largest producer, produced 384,783 bpd in December, an increase of 4.3% in the same comparison.

The French TotalEnergies, the third largest producer, produced 146,285 bpd in December, an increase of 16% in the period.

Gas production averaged 156.618 million m³/d in December, a reduction of 3.4% compared to the previous month and an increase of 11.8% compared to the same month in 2022.
