The state of Alagoas registered the opening of 7,500 micro and small businesses in 2023 (more than 20 per day). The number is 8% higher than the previous year, when 6,900 enterprises were created. The data is part of a survey by Sebrae based on the National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJ) of the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service (RFB). The data was announced this Friday (2) by the president of the institution, Décio Lima, during the Sebrae Pelo Brasil agenda. Alagoas is the 14th state visited by the project, which highlights the potential of Brazilian states for entrepreneurship.

In the case of new micro-enterprises (ME), a category that earns up to R$360 thousand per year, the jump in Alagoas was from 5.6 thousand to 6.1 thousand businesses between 2022 and 2023. As for new small companies (EPP ), whose annual revenue ranges from R$360,000 to a ceiling of R$4.8 million, the numbers registered a variation from 1,344 to 1,425 new companies in the same period. Together, ME and EPP form the so-called micro and small companies (MSE).

For the president of Sebrae, Décio Lima, the data from Alagoas shows the commitment that the institution in the state has in the continuous search for promoting entrepreneurship in the region.

The numbers reveal what this extraordinary construction of encouraging the entrepreneur of the people of Alagoas achieved, the training offered that Sebrae allowed, ensuring that this significant portion of the Alagoas economy, the small business segment, can be sure of its greatness, in the reach of its existence, so as not to be ephemeral activism, but sure generators of income.

For the president of Sebrae, the significant growth in the number of new Micro and Small Businesses demonstrates the improvement in the Brazilian economy. “The numbers show that entrepreneurs feel more confident about the direction of our economy. They are more motivated to enter the world of entrepreneurship with investments and making the economy spin,” he assessed. “For the country, this represents more job creation, greater revenue and more money in movement, with social inclusion,” he added.

According to the survey, the opening of new registrations of individual microentrepreneurs (MEI) remained stable. In Alagoas, there were 26,920 new MEI in 2023. Adding the MEI to micro and small companies in Alagoas, the total number of new small businesses opened reached 34.4 thousand last year.

Décio Lima highlighted that small businesses have been fundamental over recent years in keeping the Brazilian economy active. “Micro and small companies are the first to react in times of crisis. Thanks mainly to them, the country is able to recover employment levels and income generation. Our research shows that small businesses have accounted for approximately 7 in every 10 jobs created,” he assessed.
