Understand why the next few days will be the best of summer on the beaches

The forecast is for many sunny days with warmer and clearer seas | RS GOVERNMENT

The next few days are strong candidates to be the best of the 2024 summer season on the beaches of the coast of Rio Grande do Sul with lots of sun and clearer, calmer and warmer sea conditions. Thus, both atmospheric and oceanic conditions can be excellent.

After a January of many days with “chocolate” seas, the effect of algae proliferation, with colder and darker waters, the gauchos on the coastal beaches tend to enjoy many green flag days with calm, warm and clearer seas.

These excellent conditions that make seasonal vacationers happy are directly related to atmospheric and oceanic conditions that interact, generating the arrival of warmer or colder water on the beaches of Rio Grande do Sul.

Therefore, there is no need to look for the beaches of Santa Catarina to find warmer or clearer seas, although the coast of Santa Catarina is suffering from environmental problems and different points that have resulted in several spots unsuitable for swimming.

The warmer and clearer sea, however, will cause discomfort for Rio Grande do Sul vacationers. As is common when the waters warm up more on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, the tendency is for the presence of water mothers to increase.

The weather will be excellent with a predominance of sunshine for many days in a row on the beaches on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul. The heat will be present, especially in the sun, however it will not be excessive with very high temperatures concentrated in places further away from the coastal strip.

What explains the sea in better conditions than expected has oceanic and atmospheric origins. First, it is necessary to understand that there are two sea currents that act off the coast of Brazil. The Brazil Current, with warm and clear waters, and the Malvinas Current, with colder and often turbid waters.

The Brazilian Current operates in most of the Brazilian coast, while the Malvinas Current is the rule in Rio Grande do Sul. In the first half of February, the passage of more active cold fronts will be very scarce in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, so there will be little incidence of wind from the South quadrant. On the contrary, with a very hot air mass, the winds blew predominantly from West to North.

Without the advance of cold fronts and the formation of a cyclone with a southerly swell that would bring colder waters from the south to the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, the Brazilian Current advances to the coast of Rio Grande do Sul and brings warmer and clearer waters. This can be seen in sea surface temperature anomaly maps.

The ocean is much warmer than normal in a large area of the South Atlantic, which follows a drought pattern in Argentina and Uruguay with temperatures well above average this summer in both countries. Thus, the dry weather that punishes the interior favors the sea in better conditions on the coast.
