As of this Thursday, ‘catch and release’ modality is allowed on the Paraguay and Paraná rivers
Sports fishing lovers, the “catch and release” amateur fishing modality, in which the fish is hooked and then returned alive to the river, will be open from today (1st) in the channels of the Paraná and Paraguay rivers. This decision is provided for in State Decree no. 15,166, of February 21, 2019.
The closed period, however, continues in the rivers of Mato Grosso do Sul until February 28th. In the “catch and release” mode, the amateur fisherman must use smooth hooks, without barbs, so as not to injure the fish, and immediately return it to the water in the place from where it was removed to guarantee its survival.
It is important for fishermen to pay attention because “catch and release” can only be practiced in the channels of these rivers, and by no means at the mouths of their tributaries. Furthermore, to carry out this type of fishing, the fisherman must first issue an Environmental Authorization for Amateur Fishing, in the “catch and release” modality.
The closed period for the species, however, remains in force throughout the State until February 28th. In the meantime, no fish can be removed from rivers, except for exceptions provided for by law. Another important alert: the “catch and release” modality will only be released in the channels of the Paraná and Paraguay rivers.
Fishermen cannot enter bays, lakes and marginal lagoons, marshes and other watercourses that are connected to these rivers.
Failure to comply with legislation can lead to fishermen being arrested and taken to the Civil Police Station to issue a report of arrest in the act, and, if convicted, they may face a sentence of one to three years in prison. Furthermore, all fishing equipment, outboard motors, boats and vehicles used in fishing will be seized, in addition to being administratively fined.
