President of the Senate discusses with the head of the Executive the MP for re-encumbrance, elections in MG and State debt
The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), is meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) at Palácio do Planalto. The meeting is held before the inauguration of the new Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski.
Pacheco discusses with Lula MP (provisional measure) 1,202/2023, which deals with the re-encumbrance of 17 sectors of the economy. Congress expects the government to back down from the proposal. However, Planalto has not yet publicly commented on the issue. The president of the Senate has already warned the head of the Executive that the text will not pass in Congress.
In addition to the MP, Pacheco also discusses this year’s elections in Minas Gerais. The president of the Senate intends to run for governor in the state in 2026 with the support of Lula. Discuss alliances in October’s municipal elections.
Minas’ debt is also on the list of conversations. At the end of last year, Pacheco reached an agreement with the Executive for Minas’ debt. The fiscal recovery proposal presented by the state governor, Romeu Zema (Novo), was criticized and left aside by the Assembly of Minas Gerais, which is also negotiating with Planalto the alternative measure focused on debt installments and the federalization of some state-owned companies, such as Codemig (Minas Gerais Economic Development Company).
Next week, Lula will go to Minas Gerais. In 2023, the president was criticized for not visiting the only Southeastern state he won in 2022. He will be in Juíz de Fora on February 7 to announce federal works at the Federal University of Minas Hospital. On the 8th, he will go to Belo Horizonte to announce more investments. It is expected that Pacheco will follow some of the PT member’s agendas.
