Gasoline and diesel prices rise this Thursday with new ICMS

From this Thursday (1st), fueling the vehicle and cooking will become more expensive. The Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS), a tax charged by states, will rise for gasoline, diesel and cooking gas.

The increase reflects the decision of several states to readjust the ICMS for products in general to compensate for revenue losses.

In most cases, states raised general rates from 18% to 20%. As fuels follow a different taxation system, the adjustments will be with fixed values in cents.

The increase was approved in October by the National Finance Policy Council (Confaz), a body that brings together state finance secretaries. This is the first adjustment to the ICMS after the change in the charging model sanctioned by former president Jair Bolsonaro in March 2022.

Previously, ICMS was charged according to a percentage of the total price defined by each federation unit. Now, the tax is charged at a fixed amount per liter, in the case of gasoline or diesel, or per kilogram, in the case of cooking gas.

The rates changed to the following values:

Fuel Current tax rates From February 1st
Gasoline R$ 1.22 per liter R$ 1.37 per liter
Diesel R$ 0.9456 per liter R$ 1.06 per liter
cooking gas R$ 1.2571 per kilo R$ 1.41 per kilo

When considering the average price calculated by the National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP), a liter of gasoline will rise to an average of R$5.71. In the case of diesel, the average value per liter will increase to R$5.95 (normal diesel) and more than R$6 for S-10 diesel, which has a lower lead content.

The price of gasoline and diesel will become more expensive this Thursday. With an increase of R$0.15, gasoline will rise to an average of R$5.71, taking into account the average price of the product based on price research by the National Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP). Diesel oil, on the other hand, will have an average increase of R$0.12, reaching an average of R$5.95, and Diesel S-10 could be above R$6.00 per liter, on average.

In the case of cooking gas, the average price of a 13-kilo cylinder would rise, on average, from R$100.98 to R$103.60.
