This Monday, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni held a press conference after another training session for the team. The team is preparing for the classic against Brazil, this Tuesday, in the sixth round of the World Cup qualifiers. The coach commented on the team that should take to the field in the duel.
“I’ve already decided on the team, but I haven’t told the players yet. It is possible that Di María will start the game as a starter, like the other athletes. The idea is not to change the team too much, but it is certain that there will be some changes”, stated Scaloni.
The coach also spoke about the team’s last game, which was defeated by Uruguay 2-0. This was the team’s first defeat since winning the World Cup.
“We always said we were not unbeatable. In addition to the final result, you have to be prepared for it and continue competing. Even though the team didn’t play a good game, they never stopped believing, they kept trying and that’s what makes me feel at ease.”
“We analyzed the reasons that caused the defeat and the important thing is to digest it quickly. We are lucky that there is another game to play immediately and that is for the best. The difficult thing would be to meet again in a long time, that would cost a lot more. Now we have a rematch and that’s the best”, added the coach.
Scaloni also commented on the goal drought that striker Lautaro Martínez is going through for the national team, demonstrating full support for the player: “You have to look at how many matches have passed, because saying ‘a year without scoring for the national team’ implies that 15 (games) have taken place ). He scored a penalty goal that was the most important (against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the World Cup).”
“I’m not a big fan of statistics, for his team he continued to score. Julián (Álvarez) also continued to score and it’s not a worry. It’s a relative statistic, it’s obvious that he has a goal and that doesn’t worry me. The difficult thing is to choose one over the other”, said the coach.
Argentina’s probable lineup against Brazil
With few changes, check out the likely team that will take the field against Brazil: Dibu Martínez; Nahuel Molina, Cuti Romero, Nicolás Otamendi and Nicolás Tagliafico; Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister; Angel Di María (Nicolás González), Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martínez (Julián Álvarez).
