The Civil Defense of Santa Catarina confirmed, this Monday (20), the fifth tornado in the state in November. The phenomenon was recorded in the South region and caused damage in Balneário Gaivota and Sombrio.
The tornado occurred on Saturday (18) around 2 am. Before, there was a strong storm, associated with a cold front and humidity coming from the Amazon region. These systems favored the storms that hit Santa Catarina on Friday (17) and Saturday (read more below).
With the tornado, Balneário Gaivota and Sombrio suffered damage such as partial and total roofing of homes and warehouses, as well as the breaking of trees.
Residents even filmed the funnel-shaped cloud (look above). According to the Civil Defense, in the image it is not possible to see the funnel touching the ground, which is the necessary criterion for classifying a tornado, but, when analyzing the images of the damage and the meteorological radar of Morro da Igreja, in Serra Santa Catarina, it is noticeable that passage of the phenomenon.
Wind speeds exceeded 100 km/h.
- In Cunha Porã, in the West, on November 6th. The force of the winds even uprooted trees;
- In Tubarão, in the South, on November 11th. The tornado struck trees, roofs, vegetation and billboards;
- In Itá, in the West, on November 16th. With the force of the winds, trees were twisted;
- In Urupema, in Serra, also on Saturday. The winds destroyed one house and caused damage to others. Trees were also hit.

Rain situation in SC
In the most recent floods, since November 14th, at least 67 municipalities have registered some type of occurrence and counting the October rains, there are already 71 cities in an emergency situation and 11 in public calamity, informed the State Secretariat for Assistance Social, Women and Family.
In total, 40 shelters were open this Monday. Of this total, 21 are in Rio do Sul, in the Itajaí Valley, one of the cities most affected by intense rain. In this city, 1,659 people are in shelters.
The other municipalities with open shelters are Lontras, also in Vale do Itajaí, with five locations and Irineópolis, in the north of the state, with four.
To the regions of Vale do Itajaí, Oeste and Serra were the most affected.
On federal highways, more than 100 incidents were attended due to the storms, according to the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT). According to the Military Highway Police (PMRv), there were 95 sections affected on state tracks.
