Rio – Twenty dogs were found tied to two supermarket carts, this Tuesday (14), in Benfica, in the North Zone of Rio. The animals, seven adults and 13 puppies, were rescued after more than 30 calls from the population, requesting an investigation into mistreatment at the location.

The rescued animals were found with hyperthermia without water, without food, tied to two supermarket carts under the sun. The rescue was carried out by agents from the Municipal Department of Animal Protection and Defense.

“The situation of these animals, crammed into two supermarket carts, in this heat, under the sun is unacceptable, deplorable! Keeping the animals trapped is a crime, depriving them of shade, water and food too!”, said the Secretary of Animal Protection , Flávio Ganem .

They were taken to the Fazenda Modelo Animal Protection Center, in Guaratiba, in the West Zone of Rio, where they will receive full care and will soon be put up for adoption.

The 52-year-old man who was in possession of the animals, has psychological disorders, refused assistance from the social assistance department who was at the scene, and denied the crime of mistreatment.

What is considered mistreatment?

Abandon, keep in chains, keep in small places without the possibility of circulation, do not offer medical assistance, do not feed, do not give water, do not shelter from the sun, rain or cold, injure, attack, mutilate, keep in an unhealthy place, among others.
