18-year-old athlete dies after falling ill during a futsal match in Soledade
An 18-year-old athlete died after falling ill during a match of the municipal futsal championship of Soledade, in the North of Rio Grande do Sul. The victim was identified as Guilherme Carvalho Castaman. (See video above)
In a statement, the Department of Sports and Leisure, linked to the city hall, lamented the fatality. “There are good memories of this young athlete who brought so much joy to everyone who was lucky enough to live alongside him.” (Read the full text below)
Guilherme’s sudden illness occurred when the game was coming to an end. A local radio broadcast the match on video. In the images, it is possible to see that the young man takes a lateral. Then he sits on the bench and feels unwell. Immediately, the match is interrupted to assist the player.
According to the municipal health secretary, Edinara França, Guilherme fell and started convulsing. The first service was carried out at the José Américo Martins Gymnasium by a medical team from the city hall. The game was suspended.
He was taken to an area hospital. The medical team tried to revive him, but the young man did not survive. The death certificate indicated sudden death from unknown causes.
