Bathing report from the Environmental Institute (IMA) of Alagoas released last Monday (13) reveals that only five of the 67 beaches analyzed by the agency are unsuitable for bathing.
According to the institute, the high amount of bathing is due to the dry and rainless period, which favors health-safe sea bathing since there is no runoff of rainwater, which takes waste, garbage and sewage to the sea.
To determine bathing ability, the IMA takes into account a resolution from the National Environmental Council (Conama), which determines criteria for classifying beaches into the “suitable” and “unsuitable” categories.
According to the report, the unsuitable places for swimming are the Niquim River – approximately 300 meters from the mouth, in Barra de São Miguel; Ponta Verde beach (on Avenida Antônio Gouveia, intersection with Rua João Carneiro); Ponta Verde beach (on Álvaro Otacílio Avenue, between General Dr. João Saleiro Pitão and Dr. Rubens Canuto streets); Maragogi beach (at the mouth of the Maragogi river); and Maragogi beach (at the mouth of the Persinunga river).
