According to Vale’s Emergency Action Plan for Dams, 295 people are part of the population included in Santa Rita Durão; 144 of them are residents of the region. The other people are mine employees, possible passersby and employees of other buildings in the area.
The dam is far from emergency level 2. We can say that security is complete in relation to the dike and the tailings pile. The safety of the people of Santa Rita is guaranteed today.

The city’s Undersecretary of Civil Defense, Welbert Stopa, says that Vale guaranteed that any mass movement in the structure “would not be significant in the community”. Therefore, it will not be necessary to evacuate the population.
“There is no level increase for waste piles. Some people ask why the level hasn’t risen, but the dam itself is stable, in perfect working order. There is an anomaly in this stacking, in Permanent 1, and after presenting the company’s studies, we reached the consensus that it was not necessary to evacuate the community, which is 144 people who reside in the Self-Rescue Zone (ZAS)”, he said.
Yesterday, after an inspection, the ANM said that “it found no apparent anomaly that presents an imminent risk “structure” of the cells.
Also according to the agency, Vale presented a preliminary study pointing out that there is no risk. “Even so, given the current conditions of the reservoir and the conservative contour of the hypothetical rupture study of the pile, Vale technicians understand that the impacts of a possible rupture considering this failure condition are irrelevant in the downstream area”, says the note from the ANM.
