The Coach Walhederson Brandão Barbosaaged 40, who was at the head of Amazonense Under-16 Volleyball Team, was arrested on the morning of this Tuesday, 14th, in Manaus. Barbosa is investigated by favoring prostitution and sexual exploitation of students. At the time of his arrest, he was sleeping on a bed with two 15 year old teenagers.
According to the Manaus Civil Police, investigations point to at least 12 victims of the technician’s criminal actions. Some of them were living with Barbosa, who co-opted teenagers from the countryside with the promise that he would help them with their training and took them to live with him.
“The criminal acts were carried out based on the dreams of teenagers, who aspire to become professional volleyball athletes. He, in some way, bought the dreams of these victims, in exchange for sexual acts”, said Bruno Fraga, general delegate of the PC .
The head delegate of the Specialized Police Station for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (Depca), Joyce Coelho, explained that the investigations began three months ago, after receiving an anonymous complaint informing about a video that had been shared on a messaging application, between students at a public school, in which Barbosa appears to have sexual relations with two teenagers.
“From the first complaint, it was possible to identify six victims and launch six Police Inquiries, five of which are still ongoing. When we began to interview the victims, the man began to put pressure on the victims to find out what they they were talking at the police station, that is, he knew about the ongoing investigation”, he said.
According to the holder, based on all the evidence, a request was made for the man’s temporary arrest, as well as for the precautionary measure of search and seizure at his residence, since the individual also recorded sexual acts as a type of fetish. . The investigation also found that the technician committed the crimes almost 20 years ago.
Omission of the Amazonian Federation
Joyce also stated that there is a possible omission on the part of the Amazon Volleyball Federation, as several victims formally reported it and the Federation only opened internal investigations, without removing the offender from his position, allowing him to have access to the students.
“We will inform the Federation so that they can clarify the situation for us and answer why they did not report the facts to the Judiciary Police, as well as forward the investigations to us”, he pointed out.
In a statement, the Amazon Volleyball Federation said it repudiated “the facts involving the coach” and “is available to the competent bodies for any clarification”.
“At no time, in search of any harmful attitude from the coach, did we find any type of occurrence that would make us aware of the disgusting attitudes of the person involved,” said the entity.
