The Federal District stands out for having the highest percentage of people who use the internet. Of the total 2.7 million inhabitants aged 10 or over, 96% — which is equivalent to 2.6 million — use the internet daily, This is what the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNADC), published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), points out.
With 91.4%, Goiás appears in second place in the ranking. At the end of the list, with the lowest number of users, is the state of Acre, with 77.8%.
Marcos Urupá, researcher at the communication policy laboratory at the University of Brasília (UnB), states that the higher per capita income and the The size of the “square” influences the decisions of internet operators.
“The infrastructure of the square [DF] conditions this data. It is small compared to other states and operators are looking for this to invest. An example is 5G, which was a technology first implemented here”, says Marcos Urupá.
The research shows an increase in the percentage of people in the Federal District who use the internet in recent years:
- 2016: 86.1%
- 2019: 92.7%
- 2022: 96.6%
The group with the most people who accessed the internet was 30 to 39 years old (20.7%), after 40 to 49 years (19%). With the lowest percentage was the age group between 10 to 13 years (6.3%) (see more in the table below).
Although 96% of people over 10 years old use the internet daily in DF, the number of free internet in the capital is the lowest among the Central-West states.
According to PNADC, only 4.9% stated that they had accessed the service free of charge in schools, universities or public libraries. In Mato Grosso do Sul, the percentage was 12.3% who used the free internet in these locations.
Marcos Urupá says that this data is “worrying” for the Federal District and indicates a lack of public policies.
“It is a very worrying fact. By making access difficult in schools and libraries, people have less information and this makes learning difficult”, says the researcher.
The research showed that, in DF, 92 thousand people did not use the internet in the last 3 months in which the study was carried out. The two most cited reasons were: not knowing how to use the internet and the lack of need.
