In 2023 alone, ES recorded more than 1,100 cases of mistreatment in ES
The 66-year-old victim of mistreatment by her own daughter, who was rescued in Colatina, in the northwest of Espírito Santo, received gifts from the police officers who rescued her. “Elderly people are like children. When they are mistreated and find someone who welcomes them, they consider that person a relative. She saw that in me and my partner. Whenever we have the opportunity, we will be here. I brought her a gift”, declared the sergeant upon leaving the visit.
The elderly woman is living in a nursing home in the same municipality. She was rescued on November 2nd and was kept in private prison in an abandoned house.
The elderly woman was malnourished, lying on the slats of a bed without a mattress and with body pain. Her daughter beat and stole her mother’s benefits.
She told the police, when she was rescued, that she was alone in the house, that she had not received prescription medication for months and was hungry. On the day of the rescue, she had eaten some rice and beans in the morning.
When approached by the military, the victim said he felt a lot of pain in his back and chest. Furthermore, she confessed that she suffered attacks and death threats from her daughter and the men who lived with her.
“From the situation in which we found her and collected her, to today, she is very different. She is another person, another treatment. She is eating. The difference is clear, given the mistreatment she had been suffering. She is recovering and, in view of than it was, it’s much better”, described Sergeant Rodrigues this Wednesday.
She and the other two men, who were in the house at the time of the rescue, were charged with mistreatment of an elderly person. One of the men was a companion, and another was the brother-in-law of the victim’s daughter. The woman was also charged with financial violence against an elderly person.
Mistreatment of the elderly increases in ES
According to the Public Security Secretariat of Espírito Santo (Sesp), the cases of elder abuse have increased in the state.
This year alone, From January to October, 1,182 cases of mistreatment have been recorded, compared to 1,003 in the same period last year.
“Generally, elderly people have difficulty moving around, difficulty understanding, and have reduced, weaker reasoning. Often, family members use this retirement, the elderly person’s assets, and often do not pass on this value for the benefit of the elderly person”, he pointed out. delegate Jaciely Souza.
In Colatina alone, where the elderly woman was rescued, there were 13 cases of violations of the elderly’s rights, from January to October this year. Last year, in the same period, there were eight.
