A man was killed by police officers from Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar (Route) in the early hours of this Wednesday, 8, in Ponta Porã, on the border of Mato Grosso do Sul with Paraguay. The Route arrived in Ponta Porã, separated from the Paraguayan city of Pedro Juan Caballero by an avenue, on the morning of Monday, 6th. According to the police, in the early hours of Wednesday, the military was patrolling the MS-164 highway when they saw scouts monitoring the road for the passage of drugs and contraband. During the approach, there was a confrontation and exchange of shots, according to the PM. One suspect was struck and died at the scene. He was undocumented and had not been identified until early afternoon. According to the incident registered at the 1st Civil Police Station of Ponta Porã, a weapon was seized from the suspect.
The commander of the 4th PM Battalion in Ponta Porã, lieutenant colonel Edson Guardiano, said that the confrontation took place in a place where scouts for drug traffickers and smugglers are usually located. He informed that military judicial police procedures were opened, as it was the action of a military member on duty.
“Teams from outside are in the State to learn about the reality of the border and support the fight against the activities of criminal organizations,” he said. The operation by state forces takes place during the same period as the GLO (Guarantee of Law and Order) decree signed last week by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to the Public Security Secretariat of the State of São Paulo (SSP-SP), Operation Impacto is an initiative of the departments of the five States. The first phase took place in May this year, after the first meeting of the secretaries, in Curitiba. During this phase, carried out only on the borders of the five states, 3.3 tons of marijuana, 92.4 kg of cocaine, 21.5 kg of crack, 2.1 kg of hashish were seized and 127 arrests were made. 184 vehicles were recovered.
During the second stage of Operation Impacto SulmaSSP, carried out between the 20th and 23rd of July, 11.1 tons of narcotics and 185 weapons were seized, in addition to the arrest of 1,563 people, of which 423 were wanted. In total, the action mobilized 17,418 police officers from the five states, in addition to 7,000 vehicles, with the support of 11 aircraft, 23 drones, 20 boats, 26 horses and 30 dogs.
The second phase took place last July and the third began this Tuesday, the 7th, covering border operations. The PM of the State of São Paulo informed that the operation is the result of a partnership signed between the state Public Security secretariats to strengthen the inspection actions of people and the means of transport used to cross the country’s border and the borders of the respective States.
