Areas of five states in the Southeast and Central-West of Brazil will face a heat wave that should last at least until Friday, 10th. The information is from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), which this Wednesday, 8, issued a yellow level alert for São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Goiás. This warning is given whenever the forecast indicates that the temperature should be 5°C above average for a period of at least two consecutive days.
In São Paulo, the capital is in a state of alert for high temperatures, decreed by the Municipal Civil Defense. According to the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE), hot and dry air keeps the weather stable this Thursday, 9th. The thermometers oscillate between the minimum of 20°C at dawn and the maximum 34°C in the middle of the afternoon, according to Meteoblue.
On Friday the 10th, the minimum will be 20°C and the maximum 28°Cand there is no expectation of rain.
The city of São Paulo recorded on September 24th the highest temperature of the year, 36.8ºC, according to data from the Inmet. As a bonus, the heat record in 2023 so far in the capital of São Paulo was also the highest for the month of September since 1943, the year in which Inmet began taking measurements.
Cross country
In some municipalities, mainly in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso, maximum temperatures are expected to exceed 42°C this week. On the afternoon of Tuesday, 7th, the municipality of Porto Murtinho, in Mato Grosso do Sul, already registered 42.3°C. In Cuiabá, in Mato Grosso, the temperature reached 40.4°C.
According to the forecast, the strong heat is expected to continue throughout next week, but the area covered by the phenomenon is expected to change. Inmet continues to monitor the situation. From Saturday the 11th, if the situation persists, the heat wave warning will be updated and may expand or even have its severity level changed.
