A man, convicted of killing his own uncle over a land dispute, was arrested this Thursday (8), in Limoeiro de Anadia, in the interior of Alagoas. According to the deputy who carried out the arrest warrant, Daniel Mayer, the accused is the prisoner who had been on the run for the longest time in the State: 32 years hidden from the police.
According to the police authority, the accused, sentenced to 15 years in prison, was arrested in the village of Genipapo, a rural area of Limoeiro de Anadia, which is in the Agreste of Alagoas. He, who is currently 74 years old, was hiding in a sister’s house.
To Gazetaweb, Daniel Mayer informed that the escape for 32 years is the record ever recorded in Alagoas. “A fugitive for so long has never been found in Alagoas. The team worked hard to find him,” said the police chief.
The victim was Benedito Cosmo da Silva, who was 37 years old in 1991, when the crime occurred. He was the uncle of the man arrested this Thursday. Benedito was killed while sleeping in his room, with a shotgun shot into his head by his own nephew.
The reason for the murder, according to investigations, was land disputed by the family itself.
The investigations also indicate, according to Mayer, that the victim’s nephew did not act alone. He was the executioner. Behind the crime, there were two more relatives identified as planning the murder: the nephew’s mother, who was Cosmo da Silva’s sister, and the executor’s wife, both of whom are now deceased, according to the Civil Police.
“At the time of his arrest, he said he knew of the existence of the warrant, but that he did not believe that he would be located by the Civil Police”, added delegate Daniel Mayer.
