Pope Francis accepted the request of the Archbishop of Paraíba, Dom Manoel Delson Pedreira da Cruz, to appoint an assistant. With this, Father Alcivan Tadeus Gomes de Araújo, from the clergy of the diocese of Caicó, in the Seridó Region of Rio Grande do Norte, was designated as titular bishop of “Fata” and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Paraíba.
Father Alcivan, born on May 21, 1972 in Cerro Corá (RN), is the son of the late Valdenor Florêncio de Araújo and Francisca Alcioneide Gomes de Araújo. He began his training at the Diocesan Seminary Santo Cura d’Ars, in Caicó, in 1990. The following year, he transferred to the Archdiocesan Seminary of São José do Rio de Janeiro, where he studied philosophy at the Faculdade Ecclesiastica de Filosofia João Paulo II and theology at the Instituto Superior de Theologia of the archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, from 1993 to 1996. He was ordained a priest on February 1, 1997.
He holds a master’s degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, having completed his training between 2009 and 2012.
In the diocese of Caicó, he held various positions, including parish priest, episcopal vicar for Ministries and Vocations, treasurer, judicial vicar of the diocese and deputy judicial vicar, as well as vice-president of the Interdiocesan Ecclesiastical Court of Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte. He was also spiritual director of the São João Paulo II Initial Formation House and the Santo Cura d’Ars Diocesan Seminary, and assistant director of Radios 95.9 FM and 102.7 Rural FM in Caicó. He participated as a member of the College of Consultors and the Presbyteral Council, the Diocesan Commission for Architecture and Sacred Arts, and the Board of Directors of the Sant’Ana Educational Foundation.
Throughout his pastoral career, he held roles as parochial vicar of the Parishes of Sant’Ana and Imaculada Conceição in Currais Novos (1997), rector of the Diocesan Seminary Santo Cura d’Ars (1998), administrator of the Autonomous Pastoral Area of Nossa Senhora do Patronage in São Fernando (RN) (1998), parish priest of the Parish of São Francisco de Assis in Lagoa Nova (RN) (1999-2002), president of the Diocesan Department of Social Action/DDAS (2004-2007), parish priest of the Parish of São Sebastião de Parelhas (RN) (2003-2009), parish administrator of the Parish of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Cruzeta (RN) (2012), parish priest of the Parish of Sant’Ana de Caicó (2015-2022) and parish priest of the Parish of Our Lady of Conceição de Jardim do Seridó (RN) (2023).
