According to Inmet, a heat wave is characterized when the temperature is at least 5 °C above average for at least three consecutive days. In Mato Grosso do Sul, this has been happening since Monday (6) and the forecast is that the heat will reach other areas by the end of the week.
In the coming days, the heat wave will encompass almost all of Mato Grosso do Sul (except the Extreme South), the West and North of São Paulo, Center-South of Mato Grosso, Triângulo Mineiro, West, Southwest and Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, in Minas Gerais, in addition to the Center-South of Goiás.
In Espírito Santo, the heat wave should set in from next Friday (10), and could last until at least Tuesday (14). Until the heat arrives over the weekend, the State receives a flow of moisture from the ocean that favors cloud cover and temperature control.
In locations in Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, temperatures above 40 °C are expected, but in Espírito Santo, thermometers should be around 37 °C. As Inmet explains, in November (mid-spring) the amount of solar radiation, which falls on the surface in the Southern Hemisphere, is greater than in September (winter/early spring), so the heat wave this time could be more intense than that of September.
What will cause the heat wave?
Inmet explains that November is normally one of the rainiest months of the year in the Central-West and Southeast regions of the country. However, during this period there may also be a dry spell (absence of rain during the rainy season), when the greater incidence of solar radiation on the surface favors an increase in temperatures.
The cause of this summer is the action of an area of high pressure at medium levels of the atmosphere, preventing the formation of clouds.
