The Public Administration Commission receives hit by dams and representatives of the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais to discuss the MP’s model agreements to repair damage caused by mining companies in Itatiaiuçu, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (RMBH), and in the district of Gesteira, in Barra Longa (Zona da Mata).

The meeting will be this Thursday (9/11/23), at 10 am, in the José Alencar Auditorium of the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG), in response to the request of deputy Beatriz Cerqueira (PT).

The topic has already been discussed at ALMG at least twice. In May this year, during a hearing by the same commission, those affected reported that the Federal Public Ministry would have approved, without community participation, an agreement on values for rebuilding houses of resettlement carried out by Renova Foundation after the collapse of the Fundão dam.

These houses would have been impacted by truck traffic in Barra Longa and would have structural problems. Residents questioned the approved values and also the number of houses benefiting from the agreement, which would be lower than the real number.

Still at the meeting, the head of the Social Inclusion and Mobilization Coordination (Cimos) of the MP of Minas Gerais, Paulo César Vicente de Lima, committed to evaluating the topic. He is one of the guests at the new meeting.

In June, the Public Administration Commission visited the site and found the damage. In Gesteira, they were in the “lower part”, hit directly by the mud from the dam, and in the “higher part”, where the mud did not reach, but there were subsequent impacts due to the flow of Renova trucks and machines.

Residents disputed the number of 22 families in Gesteira that would have been affected, according to information from Renova. According to them, this number reaches 70.

In addition to members of the Public Ministry, representatives of those affected by dams in Barra Longa, Itatiaiuçu, Nova Lima (RMBH) and Mariana (Central) have already confirmed their presence at the hearing, as well as other authorities.
