“After so many years we do not see any sign of change or planning by the State Government to remove the population from this situation”. The statement was made by state deputy Alan Sanches (União Brasil), leader of the opposition group in the Legislative Assembly of Bahia (Alba), after a survey by the Jones dos Santos Neves Institute (IJSN) showed that 51.6% of Bahians live in a situation of poverty, with a monthly income of up to R$ 665.02.
According to the survey, based on 2022 data from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), by the IBGE, Bahia is on the list of nine Brazilian states where the majority of the population is made up of people living in poverty. Maranhão (58.9%), Amazonas (56.7%) and Alagoas (56.2%) lead the ranking.
“The PT has been in government of Bahia for 17 consecutive years and this is the balance that remains for the population. It is proven that this management model is bankrupt, because it does not produce social and economic development in a sustainable way and does not generate real conditions to improve people’s lives”, emphasizes Alan Sanches.
He points out that the current administration repeats the absence of public policies to face the issue seriously. “The government launched the Bahia sem Fome program, but it actually looks more like a school gymkhana. It was supposed to be a serious program to eradicate hunger, but they profess to make politics out of people’s lack,” he adds.
The opposition leader also points out that the State has stopped making investments and stimulating the generation of jobs and income, which placed Bahia with the highest unemployment rate in Brazil (14.4%) for the fifth consecutive time, even above the national average of 8.8%, according to the IBGE survey released last week. The information is advisory.
