Rio – The Environmental Protection Police Station (DPMA) informed, this Thursday (25), that the technical report made in April on trees in Tijuca, in the North Zone of Rio, was positive for the presence of poison. The case was denounced by residents of Rua Afonso Pensa, at the beginning of April, who identified the poor condition of the tree trunks.

According to the expert, the material collected from several trees on the road showed signs of the poisonous substance. Visually, the trees had blue spots and holes in their trunk.

At the current stage, administrators and employees of condominiums in the region are being heard by DPMA agents. According to the expert, the investigation is ongoing to identify the perpetrators.

Rua Afonso Pena is one of the most traditional streets in the Tijuca neighborhood. The trees that line it come from the Atlantic forest of northeastern Brazil.

The case of poisoning was registered on April 10, after residents of the neighborhood noticed the condition of the trees. The Municipal Secretary of Environment and Climate (SMAC) confirmed the existence of signs of poisoning and forwarded it to the police.

According to reports from residents heard by the DAY on that occasion, the strategy to avoid new cases was to increase the number of security cameras and ask the police for support. If the person responsible is identified, the author can be fined up to R$ 1,000.00 per damaged tree and answer for an environmental crime.

Information and complaints about tree poisoning can be sent to the Environmental Dial, through the number (021) 98596-7496.
