Beyond hexa: milk in Brazil

Is the hexa coming this year? Today is the debut of the Brazilian team in the World Cup in Qatar. As Galvão Bueno says: there is heart! Wear the hopscotch that the country of football is coming!

From the four lawn lines to the “milky field,” last year, in 2021, the country produced 35.305 billion liters, according to IBGE data, a value similar to the previous year, when Brazilian production reached 35.317 billion liters (Graph 1). This year, the IBGE preview for the third quarter of 2022, released on Friday (11/11), pointed to a total volume of milk captured of approximately 6.0 billion liters.

Still according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the size of the herd, in 2021, was approximately 15.9 million animals, a decrease of 0.1% compared to the previous year, a reflection, among other factors, of the increase in production costs. Productivity remained at 2,194 liters/cow/year, as well as in 2020.

Data from Embrapa Gado de Leite show that about 70% of milk production in Brazil comes from crossbred Holstein-Zebu cows. The Holstein breed is predominant in crosses and the most common one to be found is the cross between the Holstein breed and the Gir, an animal known as Girolando. In addition to these, the Jersey, Guzerat, Swiss Brown and Sindhi breeds are also found in the country.

Just as the biggest football competition in the world undergoes transformations throughout each edition, the Milk production has also been changing in recent years, conjuncturally and structurally
