During 2021, the Northeast Region produced almost 80 million kilograms of shrimp in captivity in Brazil. According to the Institute Brazilian of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)the region is responsible for 99.7% of the national production.

The agency released figures on the sector on Thursday 22nd. According to the IBGE, Ceará leads among the states, accounting for almost 40% of the country’s total.

“Ceará is the main producer”, informs the IBGE in a note. “With a 38.3% increase in production, the State distanced itself from Rio Grande do Norte, the state with the second largest production, and reached 33.7 thousand tons, or 42.9% of the national total.”

From 2020 to 2021, according to data from the institute, the amount produced grew by 18%. In addition, the expansion occurred for the fourth year in a row.

“With each edition of the survey, the sector shows that it has consistently overcome the crisis in the incidence of the white spot virus,” said Mariana Oliveira, an analyst at the survey. The plague has already devastated entire creations in the country.

Among the municipalities responsible for the creation, Acari (CE) occupies the first place in production: 11% of the national total. Adding the Northeast and the rest of Brazil, almost 200 cities produce shrimp in Brazil.
