After the widow and ex-wife of serial killer Lázaro Barbosa refused to settle with the Goiás Public Ministry (MPGO), the former companions of the killer of the Vidal family, from Ceilândia, were denounced for personal favoritism, with the Court of Goiás State Court (TJGO) accepting the complaint, in June. Even though they are defendants, they will only be heard in September of next year.

Ellen Vieira da Silva — the widow of Lázaro Barbosa — and Luana Cristina Evangelista Barreto — the criminal’s ex-wife —, according to the Civil Police of Goiás (PCGO), helped the serial killer escape from the police. On the day he died, after a confrontation with the Goiás police, Lázaro was at the house of his ex-mother-in-law Isabel Evangelista de Souza, also denounced by the MPGO.

In order not to file a complaint against the three, the MPGO even proposed an agreement, considering that the crime was of lesser potential, but they ended up denying it. At the time, the report Mail found that the MPGO agreement was varied. In one, they would have to provide services to the community for a period of three months, for eight hours a week. The other possibility was to pay a fine of R$ 550. If they accepted the proposal, the process would be terminated. As it did not occur, the process continued to take place. They are due to be heard on September 5, 2023.

the case

The hunt for Lázaro Barbosa de Sousa, 32, who was blamed for the murder of a family in Ceilândia Norte, ended on June 28, 2021, after 20 days of searches. The criminal was shot dead during a confrontation with the police, in Águas Lindas (GO) — a municipality about 50 km from Brasília.

Lázaro was investigated in at least eight police investigations involving robberies—robbery followed by death—and homicides. The mega-search operation began on June 9, when the police began investigating a triple homicide at Incra 9. The victims were businessman Cláudio Vidal de Oliveira, 48, and his sons, Gustavo Marques Vidal, 21, and Carlos Eduardo Marques Vidal. , 15. In addition to the murders, there was a suspicion that the young people’s mother, Cleonice Marques, 43, had been kidnapped.

The Civil Police of the Federal District (PCDF) even released a photo of Lázaro as the main accused of committing the barbarity. The discovery came after the collection and analysis of fingerprints found at the site of the massacre. The investigation allowed agents to access the suspect’s criminal record, which revealed a long history of participation in violent actions.

On June 12, Cleonice’s body was found, face down, without clothes, in a stream in Sol Nascente, about 8 km from the farm where she lived with her family. On the run, Lázaro began to spread terror in nearby regions.

the deadly confrontation

On June 28, 2021, the searches didn’t seem to end. The police team received important information that could lead to the end of the long hunt. On the same day, at dawn, a security camera in a house recorded Lázaro leaving the forest and walking on a street in Águas Lindas.

With information on where the criminal could be, Lieutenant Colonel Edson Melo’s team, responsible for the last confrontation with Lázaro Barbosa, positioned themselves at a strategic point, setting up an ambush point to capture the killer. When a Military Police aircraft was about to refuel, teams managed to spot the criminal, who, even in exchange of fire, ended up being shot. According to the colonel, 125 shots were fired, and more than 60 hit Lázaro.

Lázaro was taken to the hospital, but he could not resist his injuries and died. It was the end of a 20-day hunt.
