Who are the MA Senate candidates in 2022; see list

Five candidates for senator from Maranhão (MA) are in the running to take the seat occupied by Roberto Rocha (PTB) in the 2022 elections. The voters from Maranhão will have among their voting options names already known in the state’s political environment.

This year, only one woman participates in the Senate race in the state: Antônia Cariongo (PSOL). Among the men, Roberto Rocha (PTB), who ends his term this year, will run for reelection. Former governor Flávio Dino (PSB) left Palácio dos Leões to run for Senate for the state of Maranhão (MA). Heber Costa (Agir), known as Pastor Bel, and university professor Saulo Arcangeli (PSTU) close the group.

The first round of elections is scheduled for October 2nd and the second, if necessary, should take place on the 30th of the same month.

Antonia Cariongo (PSOL)

Antônia Cariongo, 42 years old, was born in Quilombo do Cariongo, in the municipality of Santa Rita (MA). Antônia is a rural worker and founded the Committee for the Defense of the Rights of Quilombola Peoples. A PSOL activist, she is part of the Ecosocialist Sector and is a candidate for senator from Maranhão (MA) in the 2022 elections.

Flavio Dino (PSB)

Flávio Dino, 54, has been a lawyer and professor of law at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) for 30 years. He also had a career as a federal judge for 12 years, and was president of the Association of Federal Judges of Brazil (Ajufe), before launching himself into politics in 2006. federal deputy, position for which he was elected. In 2011, he was president of the Brazilian Tourism Institute (Embratur). Three years later, he was elected governor of Maranhão and re-elected in 2018. In April, Flavio Dino left office to run for the Senate for Maranhão (MA) in the 2022 elections.

Pastor Bel (Act)

Born in Pedreiras (MA), Heber Costa is known as Pastor Bel, he is 53 years old, and is connected to the Assembly of God. In 2017, Bel spent 121 days in the Federal Senate. He was Edison Lobão Filho’s 2nd alternate, and took over when the incumbent left the position. The first alternate was also removed to run for the government of Maranhão. Before Agir, he was affiliated to PEN, PTB and PRTB. Now Pastor Bel is a candidate for the Senate for Maranhão (MA) in the 2022 elections.

Roberto Rocha (PTB)

Roberto Rocha, 57 years old, is from the capital of Maranhão, São Luís. Graduated in Business Administration, he began his political career in 1990, when he was elected state deputy. In the following election, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, where he would remain for three consecutive terms, until being elected to the Senate in 2015. In April of this year, Rocha migrated from the PSDB to the PTB to again be a candidate for the Senate for Maranhão (MA ) in the 2022 elections.

Saul Arcangeli (PSTU)

Born in São Luís (MA), Saulo Arcangeli, 50, is a federal civil servant at the Federal Public Ministry and a university professor. Graduated in Computer Science and with a master’s degree in Sociospatial and Regional Development, Arcangeli is a union activist and acts as the general coordinator of the Union of Workers of the Federal Judiciary and Public Ministry of the Union (Sintrajufe/MA). In 2018, he ran for Senate for the PSTU but was unsuccessful. Now he is again a candidate for senator for Maranhão (MA) in the 2022 elections.
