Mobile phones are present in 97.3% of households, while television can be found in 97.2% of homes in the state, according to the survey carried out since 2016. Although the difference is small (0.1%), this is the first time that cell phones ‘surpass’ televisions.

Before the pandemic, all PNADs documented the domination of televisions in the state. In the previous survey, carried out in 2019, televisions were found in 97.4% of homes – the presence of devices has been gradually decreasing in Santa Catarina.

Cell phones have become popular year after year. In 2016, mobile devices were found in 94.1% of homes in Santa Catarina, increasing to 95.4 (2017), 95.9 (2018) and 96.5 (2019), according to previous surveys.

Internet reaches 93% of homes

About 92.9% of Santa Catarina households have internet access, the study shows. Access to the service is carried out mainly by cell phone. Just over half of the homes (51.8%) have access to a microcomputer or tablet.

According to Portal R7, the access of Brazilian households to the internet grew by 6 percentage points in two years and became part of the routine of 90% of Brazilian families in 2021.

The sharpest advance in the number of households across Brazil between 2019 and 2021 occurred in rural areas. In the period, the percentage of households in which the internet was used increased from 57.8% to 74.7%.
