According to IBGE, 28 million people in Brazil did not use the internet last year

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 28.2 million people in Brazil did not use the internet in 2021. This number represents 15.3% of the Brazilian population over 10 years of age. The population that used the digital service was 155.7 million people, representing a total of 84.7%, also over 10 years old.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the institute did not carry out the research on the year 2020, but we have data from 2019, which shows that 20.5% of the population over 10 years old said they had not used the internet, which meant 36.9 million individuals.

The data were released by the IBGE this Friday (16), which are also part of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad C), carried out in the 4th quarter of 2021. The study also showed that:

  • Not knowing how to use the internet is the main reason why people do not access it;
  • The main function of the internet became video and voice calls (94.9%);
  • People between 25 and 29 years old are the ones who use the internet the most (94.5%);
  • More than half of the population aged 60 and over (57.5%) used the internet;
  • Television has surpassed the computer, being the second most used device to access the internet, behind only the cell phone;
  • 28.7 million people did not have a cell phone in 2021 (15.6% of the population aged 10 years and over);
  • Of the students in Brazil, 98.2% of those in private schools used the internet in 2021, while among public school students, the rate dropped to 87%;
  • The Midwest and Southeast regions lead internet use; North and Northeast continue to have the lowest access numbers;
  • 2.2% of Brazilian households did not have a digital TV signal via converter, satellite dish, or subscription service.

Reasons not to use the internet

  • Did not know how to use the internet: 2019: 42.4% and 2021: 42.2%;
  • Lack of interest in accessing the internet: 2019: 31.3% and 2021: 27.7%;
  • Internet access service or necessary electronic equipment was expensive: 2019: 19.2% and 2021: 20.1%;
  • Internet access service was not available in the places they frequent: 2019: 4.6% and 2021: 5.3%;
  • Another motive: 2019: 2.5% and 2021: 4.5%.

Purposes of using the internet

Pnad Contínua brings together four main goals for people to use the internet:

  • Video and voice calls: 2019: 91.4% and 2021: 95.7%;
  • Send or receive messages: 2019: 95.8% and 2021: 94.9%;
  • Watch videos, shows, movies and series: 2019: 88.9% and 2021: 89.1%;
  • Send and receive email: 2019: 62% and 2021: 62%.

Age range of users

  • 10 to 13 years: 2019: 77.5% and 2021: 82.2%;
  • 14 to 19 years: 2019: 90.1% and 2021: 91.8%;
  • 20 to 24 years: 2019: 92.6% and 2021: 94.2%;
  • 25 to 29 years: 2019: 92.6% and 2021: 94.5%;
  • 30 to 39 years: 2019: 90.5% and 2021: 93.4%;
  • 40 to 49 years: 2019: 84.7% and 2021: 09.2%
  • 50 to 59 years: 2019: 74.4% and 2021: 83.3%;
  • 60 years or older: 2019: 44.8% and 2021: 57.5%.

Devices most used to access the internet

  • Cell: 2019: 98.6% and 2021: 98.8%;
  • TV: 2019: 32.2% and 2021: 45.1%;
  • Computer: 2019: 46.2% and 2021: 41.9%
  • Tablet: 2019: 10.9% and 2021: 9.3%.
