Who has not felt a sense of well-being when helping others, whether through a word of encouragement or an incisive action of support and help? Well, this pleasurable feeling was the object of a study led by the Brazilian neuroscientist Jorge Moll Neto, MD and Ph.D., researcher at the US National Institutes of Health. He is also the director-president of the D’Or Institute for Research and Teaching. The work was published in the scientific journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America).

O site of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences brings this conclusion by dr. Moll Neto: “Today we know that good deeds are related to a longer-lasting well-being than private achievements, which have a momentary effect. We believe this discovery could have a very wide application in terms of quality of life and altruism.”.

The world needs compassion

Research of this importance brings a significant lesson, not only because we know about the beneficial feeling that reaches us, but because of what this can represent in an effective and concrete way in the improvement of society. In my literary essay God’s CapitalI assert:

What some people still don’t understand is that Charity is synonymous with Love, and that’s why they despise it, as if they could live without it. And who can live without Love? The person who says he doesn’t want to be loved is either a liar or is sick, which for me is the same. Those who lie are not in good health. However, in the New Commandment of Jesus, “Love one another as I have loved you. Only in this way can you be recognized as my disciples.” (Gospel, according to João13:34 and 35), the human being loves the human being with the Love that the Heavenly Father shaped as a divine reality, so that each of us may follow him.

This elevated feeling is a sublimated expression of Solidarity, Fraternity, Compassion, Generosity (…) And all this means survival instinct, because it is about the respect that every citizen must have for others.
