Ultra-processed foods: How does what you eat impact your longevity?

Food is an important pillar of health, we need to eat every day, this is not a choice but a physiological necessity, but what we eat can be chosen and make a big difference in our longevity, says the plastic surgeon specializing in rejuvenation , Elodia Avila, creator and presenter of the podcast “The Secret of Longevity”.

“Each day more and more ultra-processed foods are part of our daily lives, they have become more accessible and palatable, but this is a great danger as they replace natural foods, something that can greatly affect your quality of life at the same time. over the years.”

The danger of ultra-processed foods

The large amount of additives added to ultra-processed foods is one of the main factors that harm health, highlights Dr. Elodia Ávila.

“What makes an ultra-processed food so cheap and so delicious? The numerous additives used for its production are dyes, to generate stronger colors, sweeteners, to make it sweeter, emulsifiers, to give a more pleasant texture, essential to give aromas similar to other foods, etc.”.

“This forms a true cocktail of chemical substances, as most of them are not natural, which should not enter the body in such large quantities, mainly due to the lack of natural elements, for example, ultra-processed meats are not 100% meat but rather a mixture with several other elements, which reduces nutrients and increases harmful substances”, he highlights.

Is it so difficult to choose natural foods?

One of the main factors that make people choose to consume ultra-processed foods is their ease, since most of them just need to open the packaging, more natural foods are actually more expensive and more difficult to prepare?, asks Elodia Ávila.

“Yes, ultra-processed foods are simpler to prepare, but there is not a big gap between them and more natural food, this is already part of a culture of quick consumption, preparing a simple lunch can take less than 40 minutes, now you I ask, is it really worth saving 40 minutes and losing years of quality life?”
