In Santa Catarina, researchers from the Chapecó Community University (Unochapecó) are looking for new ways to repel or eliminate dengue mosquito larvae, which apparently can be done using essential oils extracted from at least three different species of plants, such as chrysanthemum.

As research is still ongoing, findings on plants that can repel mosquito Aedes aegyptithrough essential oils, are still preliminary and have not been reviewed by other experts — which occurs before the article is published in a scientific journal.

Based on Brazilian biodiversity, in another research, scientists from the Federal University of Acre (UFAC) are investigating the potential of some soil fungi to eliminate dengue mosquito larvae. The research is also promising in the search for alternative methods to contain the epidemic disease in Brazil.

Plants that repel mosquitoes

As Unochapecó scientists say, these are the three species of plants that can produce essential oils that are effective against dengue vectors:

  1. Essential oil extracted from chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum), with an outstanding repellent effect against the dengue mosquito;
  2. Essential oil from the cat’s claw plant (Uncaria tomentosa), with larvicidal effect;
  3. Essential oil from the cataya plant (Drimys brasiliensis)also known as bark d’anta, with potential larvicidal use.

Research involving methods of repelling the dengue mosquito has support from the government of Santa Catarina, through the Santa Catarina State Research and Innovation Support Foundation (Fapesc).

Increase in dengue cases

New initiatives like these, which seek to discover natural repellents against the dengue mosquito, are more than important in the current Brazilian scenario. After all, the country could register up to 5 million cases of the disease this year, according to a forecast from the Ministry of Health.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 217 thousand probable cases of the disease transmitted by mosquitoes have been recorded. This represents an increase in cases.

In addition to research with essential oils, plants and fungi, the release of mosquitoes with a bacteria known as Wolbachia and the Qdenga vaccine are new strategies that are beginning to be incorporated to contain the disease.
