Bill 5514/23 guarantees cancer patients the right to immunotherapy through the Unified Health System (SUS). According to the text, treatment must be offered in public, partner or private establishments whenever there is a medical indication. The Chamber of Deputies analyzes the proposal.

Immunotherapy consists of combating the disease by activating the patient’s own immune (defense) system. The idea is that the patient’s body is strengthened by medication and eliminates the disease with fewer unwanted effects.

“Immunotherapy has proven to be an effective alternative in the treatment of various types of cancer, providing greater chances of cure and prolonging patient survival”, argues the author, deputy Rosângela Reis (PL-MG). “However, the high cost limits access to this treatment for a large part of the population,” she says.

The text also provides for the creation of Immunotherapy Reference Centers in all regions of the country, responsible for offering treatment, carrying out clinical monitoring and promoting the training of health professionals.

It will be up to the Ministry of Health to regulate the criteria for the use, monitoring and evaluation of immunotherapy.
