Medicines based on Cannabis, a substance derived from marijuana, will be distributed free of charge in the Unified Health System (SUS) in Espírito Santo within 90 days for patients who have a medical prescription. The information was released by the Legislative Assembly of Espírito Santo (Ales).
The distribution of medicines containing the substance Cannabidiol (CBD), derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, was proposed by Bishop Alves (Republicans) in Bill (PL) 77/2023, approved by the Legislative Assembly of Espírito Santo (Ales) on October 23rd this year.
The three-month period for releasing the medicine is provided for State Law 11,968/2023, which establishes the State’s medicine distribution policy, to come into force.
The supply of Cannabidiol-based medicines, in association with other cannabinoid substances, such as Tetrahydrocannabinol — THC — will be provided by the public network and private institutions affiliated with the SUS for patients who present a medical prescription.
The medicine must be industrialized and technically prepared following the standards approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
According to the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), Cannabidiol is one of the 80 cannabinoids found in Cannabis sativa and does not present any risks to humans, even with high doses or chronic use, in addition to not having shown dependence or withdrawal effects.
During studies, Cannabidiol (CBD) was effective in treating diseases such as: epilepsy, schizophrenia, anxiety, Parkinson’s disease, among others. The Federal Council of Medicine emphasizes that the substance does not present psychoactive effects typical of marijuana.
