Doctor arrested for raping anesthetized patient in childbirth

The anesthesiologist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra was arrested in the act, this Monday (11/7), for rape of a vulnerable person. The patient who suffered the abuse was drugged and was undergoing a cesarean section at the Hospital da Mulher Heloneida Studart in Vilar dos Teles, in Rio de Janeiro.

According to police, hospital staff recorded the moment when the doctor placed his penis in the unconscious woman’s mouth. The team had already been suspicious of the anesthesiologist and was surprised by the amount of sedative applied to pregnant women.

The arrest was made by delegate Bárbara Lomba, from the Police Station for Assistance to Women in São João de Meriti. Giovanni was indicted for rape of a vulnerable person, whose penalty ranges from 8 to 15 years in prison.

The Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) opened a process to expel the anesthesiologist. Clovis Bersot Munhoz, president of Cremerj, said that “the scenes are absurd”.
