Brazil Agency – Nursing professionals who were victims of Covid-19 died younger than doctors who were also victims of the disease. The data is part of a survey by Fiocruz’s National School of Public Health. Data on deaths from the disease from March 2020 to March 2021 were considered.

In addition to the majority being up to 60 years old, more than half of the nursing professionals who died from Covid-19 were women, black and brown.

In the case of doctors, there was a predominance of men in deaths from Covid 19: 87.6% of them against 12.4% of women. The research explains that, only in 2009, female doctors became the majority among new registered in professional councils. And therefore, among older physicians, men predominate. The profile of nursing teams is historically more feminine: women are around 85% of the total.

The states with the highest proportions of health professionals killed by Covid 19 are: Pará, with 10%; São Paulo, with 11.3%; Amazonas, with 12.5% and Rio de Janeiro, with 15.8%.

Doctors and nursing professionals add up to more than 2.9 million professionals, which represents 72.5% of the total health workforce in the country.
