Renowned Broadway actor Hinton Battle, winner of three Tony Awards, passed away this Wednesday (31/1) at the age of 67. As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, Battle was hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles due to a “long illness.” The artist’s family decided not to disclose the specific cause of death.

Hinton Battle became famous for his remarkable performance as the Scarecrow in the play “The Wiz”, a musical adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz”, in 1975. The theatrical production was later turned into a film, starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, this the latter replacing Battle in the role. The actor also left his mark in cinema with his participation in “Dreamgirls”, alongside Beyoncé.

Over the course of her illustrious career, Hinton Battle has received three Tony Awards for her performances in “Sophisticated Ladies,” “The Tap Dance Kid” and “Miss Saigon.”

Debbie Allen, a longtime friend of the actor, mourned his death. “Today I honor Hinton Battle, my dear friend who left us. Let us keep him alive in our hearts and in our memory, and always speak in his name,” he wrote.
