The controversial president of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Marcio Pochmann, reiterated his intentions to implement changes in the body to modernize the statistical interpretation of the current reality. In an interview with Bloomberg News, Pochmann, who calls himself the only president of the IBGE with “attachment to work”, expressed his view that current methods cannot adequately capture aspects of the digital economy.

He highlighted that a new world is emerging, and statistics face difficulties in covering information related to occupation, income and added value in this context. The president of IBGE stated that the digital economy presents challenges to traditional measures of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), making them less accurate.

Pochmann, known for his controversial statements, mentioned support for Chinese statistical methods for evaluating the influencer economy last year. He praised Chinese efforts to understand the digitalization process, ignoring concerns about withholding economic data unfavorable to the Chinese government.

In the interview, Pochmann responded to the criticism received and accusations of damaging the Institute’s credibility, especially related to his troubled time at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA). He expressed frustration with what he considers a situation of reputation destruction by the media, citing a lack of opportunity to explain himself.

Regarding the error in publishing the IPCA-15 numbers, Pochmann confirmed an ongoing investigation. According to him, the computer programmed to publish the data was set to daylight saving time, despite the elimination of this practice in Brazil in 2019.

The text also mentioned the updating of terms such as “urban agglomerations” or “subnormal agglomerations” to “favelas and urban communities” as one of Pochmann’s notable achievements at the helm of IBGE.
