Chinese automaker BYD has started to respond to calls for public charging of electric cars in Brazil. Through a partnership with Raízen Power, BYD will have 600 Shell Recharge DC fast chargers in eight Brazilian capitals by 2026.

The agreement was signed in China and aims to give Brazil the necessary structure for the use of electric and plug-in hybrid cars. Currently, only Volvo, Audi, Porsche and BMW offer public chargers in Brazil – even so, the majority are for slow-charging hybrid cars.

The construction of Shell Recharge hubs will begin to be implemented from 2024 in the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Salvador and Belém. The partnership was celebrated at an event in Shenzhen, China, and It was attended by executives from Raízen Power, BYD and Shell.

According to BYD, the objective of the partnership is to significantly expand the public network of electric chargers in the country’s main capitals, with 100% clean and renewable energy, providing a technological recharging experience.

In total, 600 new DC charging points will be installed, adding another 18 MW of installed power to recharge electric vehicles nationwide. The partnership includes collaboration with Tupinambá, a platform focused on generating the best digital experience for electric car users.

Currently, Shell Recharge serves more than 3,300 electric vehicle customers every day with six convenience options such as a lounge, Shell Café and Shell Select. Cars are connected to chargers through the Tupinambá app. The companies have not said what the power of the chargers will be, but the average will be 30 kW.
