Elon Musk, the well-known tycoon, has invested in recent years in something that seems straight out of science fiction: the connection between the human brain and machines. This ambitious project is being developed by the startup Neuralink, which since 2019 has focused on studies to implant the first chip in the human brain.

Brain Implant: Elon Musk’s Ambition

Neuralink initially emerged with the aim of being a medical research company that created chips to assist patients undergoing treatment. However, over time, the startup’s ambitions expanded to the integration of human and artificial intelligence.

To achieve this goal, the company proposes the Telepathy chip, which would be capable of allowing a person with motor limitations to control electronic devices with just their mind. This feat would be possible through brain waves, which would be transformed into specific commands by the software present on the chip.

The Question of Ethics at Neuralink

Despite Neuralink’s promises and ambitions, the project has also been the target of various criticisms and controversies regarding ethics. According to Reuters, more than 1,500 animals have died during experiments carried out by the company since 2018, which sparked accusations of mistreatment and led to intervention by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

In addition, there are also concerns about the impact the technology could have on humans in the long term and about the privacy and cognitive freedom of study participants.

When Will the Brain Implant Hit the Market and How Much Will It Cost?

There is still no set date for the chip’s launch on the market. For now, Musk has announced that the first human to receive the Neuralink implant is recovering and, so far, the initial results are promising.

According to Bloomberg, it is estimated that the cost of implementing the chip will be around US$10.5 thousand, that is, approximately R$51 thousand. As a result, Neuralink’s estimated annual revenue, in the first five years after the chip’s launch, would be approximately US$100 million. However, before reaching this mark, the company still needs to continue its tests to establish the safety of the product.
