In an official announcement, the Communist Party of Cuba says it will “free” Alejandro Gil from his responsibilities

The Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) announced this Friday (2.Jan.2024) that Alejandro Gil will not continue as Minister of Economy. The position will be occupied by Joaquín Alonso Vázquez, who will need to overcome the increase in fuel prices in the country.

“The Council of State, upon proposal of the President of the Republic and approval prior to the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, agreed to release Comrade Alejandro Gil Fernández from his responsibilities as Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Planning.”said an official statement.

On Wednesday (January 31), the Cuban government informed the postponement of the update of fuel prices. However, price increases were not ruled out and it was ensured that once the country had “created the conditions”the new prices will be applied.

After being informed of the future increase, the director of Passenger Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Luis Ladrón de Guevara, communicated the postponement of the increase in transport tariffs in the country. According to him, prices would not be changed until fuel prices were updated.
