Brazil broke a record for clean energy generation in 2023, with 93.1% of all energy generated from renewable sources. The data comes from the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE) and was released this Friday (2).

In total, they generated 70.2 thousand average megawatts (MWm) last year, through hydroelectric, wind, solar and biomass plants.

Hydroelectric plants will account for more than half of the energy generated in 2023, with 50 thousand MWm – an increase of 1.2% compared to 2022.

Wind and solar generation plants totaled 13 thousand MWm, which represents an increase of 23.8% compared to 2022.

“The advance was driven by the favorable climate scenario, especially for the production of solar energy, and by the entry of new plants into the National Interconnected System”, states CCEE.

Wind strength is one of the main ways to increase clean energy production

The new production units increased the country’s installed capacity by 42,600 MW – the equivalent of three Itaipu plants.

Energy generation from biomass, mainly from sugarcane bagasse, was 3.2 MWm – an increase of 9.6% compared to the previous year.

“In the coming years, the opening of the free energy market for all high voltage, already operational since January, should further boost the demand for renewable energy”, stated in a statement the president of the CCEE Board of Directors, Alexandre Ramos.

The Chamber of Commerce also points to a 63.9% growth in distributed generation – when consumers themselves produce their energy, mainly from solar panels on the roofs of houses. This amount is injected into the local distributor’s network.

According to the CCEE, if there were no distributed generation, residential and small business consumption in 2023 would have been 5.9% and not 2.5%.

On Thursday (1st), CCEE announced a 3.7% increase in energy consumption in Brazil — the highest in recent years. Last year’s heatwaves are the main reason for the expansion in demand.
