What is the most sold cell phone of all time? Many would assume that it is an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy model. However, this assumption would be wrong. Surprisingly, the devices that top the list are the Nokia 1100 and Nokia 1110.

For those in a hurry:

  • The two best-selling cell phones in history are not iPhone or Galaxy, but rather the Nokia 1100 and Nokia 1110 models. This is what a list published by the VisualCapitalist website reveals, based on data from Omdia, Wikipedia and Yahoo Finance;
  • The list features the 15 best-selling cell phones, of which seven are from Nokia, seven are from Apple and one is from Samsung. The Nokia 1100 leads (250 million units sold), followed by the Nokia 1110 (248 million models) and iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (222 million units);
  • The biggest current rivalry in the cell phone market is between Apple and Samsung. Apple dominates in the US, with 52% market share, while Samsung leads globally, with 22%, compared to Apple’s 19%.

The person who pointed out the unusual fact was Arthur Igreja, a specialist in technology and innovation, on a social network. The source of the list shared by Igreja is the VisualCapitalist website, based on data from Wikipedia, Yahoo Finance and Omdia, a company specializing in technology analysis.

Podium of best-selling cell phones

In 2021, the global number of cell phones reached the impressive mark of 7.1 billion, which represents more than 90% of the world’s population. Among the 15 best-selling devices throughout history, the dominant presence of seven models from Nokia stands out, another seven from Apple and one from Samsung.

The leader of the list is the Nokia 1100, which reached the impressive mark of more than 250 million units sold over six years, before being discontinued in 2009. This cell phone coexisted with the first smartphones, such as the Nokia E series and the iPhone. Next, the Nokia 1110 appears with 248 million models sold.

Apple’s entry into the list comes from third place, occupied by the iPhone 6 line, with 222 million units sold, considering both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. The innovative 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens ushered in the era of large-screen smartphones, remaining Apple’s best-selling iPhones to date.
