For Individual Microentrepreneurs, or MEIs, knowing and understanding the relevance of the MEI statement is key to maintaining their commercial activities within the law. In this article, we will explore this fundamental document in depth. This is not just proof of mandatory monthly payment, it is a guarantee of being up to date with your tax obligations and, therefore, avoiding complications with the Federal Revenue Service.

The importance of the MEI statement is often underestimated, as it is the tool that allows the MEI not only to record and monitor its payments made via DAS-MEI (Simples Nacional Collection Document – Individual Microentrepreneur), but also to prove that it is up to date with their tax obligations, avoiding penalties and guaranteeing the rights and benefits of their category.

Now that we understand the importance of this document, the question that arises is “how do I issue a MEI statement?”. Fortunately, the process is quite simple and can be carried out without the need for an accountant or specialized assistance. Below we list the steps to obtain your MEI statement:

  1. Access the official website of the Federal Revenue Service;
  2. Go to the Simples Nacional section;
  3. At the top of the screen, find the “SIMEI” tab;
  4. Select “All Services”;
  5. In the Calculation and Declaration table, choose “PGMEI — DAS Generator Program for MEI (full version)”;
  6. Enter the requested data in the absence of a digital certificate;
  7. In “Statement Consultation/Pending”, click on “Extract Consultation”;
  8. Choose the year you want to consult.

Why regularize MEI’s tax situation?

Maintaining tax obligations up to date is crucial for the continuity of MEI operations. The DAS MEI statement is proof that all necessary payments have been made, and it can be downloaded in PDF format for any need for printing.

There are measures that can be taken if the MEI’s tax situation is irregular. Overdue debts can be paid off in full or through an easy installment plan, available on the Simples Nacional portal or through the MEI app.

What if the debts are already in Active Debt?

For MEIs who unfortunately already have debts in Active Debt, there are still alternatives available. The amounts related to INSS can be paid through the “Regularize” website, while ISS and ICMS debts can be paid through the guide issued by the municipality or state responsible for each tax.

Obviously, avoiding such situations is ideal, so it is important to always be up to date with your tax obligations. Ensuring tax regularity is the ticket to making the most of the benefits provided by the MEI category.
