Carrefour sells stores to Asun supermarket chain in Rio Grande do Sul

The Rio Grande do Sul supermarket chain Asun, after approval by the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade) and after the appeal period, bought four Carrefour stores that belonged to the Big Group. Three of them are in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre and one in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul.

In total, the units employ around 500 people. Following the movement of other supermarkets acquired by Asun, many continue as employees, passing a rehiring formality. The four stores are part of the 14 that the French group had to sell in order for its purchase of Grupo Big, owner of BIG hypermarkets and Nacional supermarkets, to be approved.

The two companies have not yet confirmed the locations. However, during analysis of the sale of R$ 7.5 billion to Carrefour, Cade informed that stores in Gravataí, Viamão and Santa Maria would have to be sold.

Asun supermarket chain currently has 37 stores

In a document filed with CADE, Asun informed that the operation represents an opportunity to expand its presence in Rio Grande do Sul, “increasing its ability to compete with other players food retail”. The network currently has 37 stores.

Meanwhile, in Rio Grande do Sul, Carrefour continues with the transformation of other stores. Two BIG hypermarkets are already under construction to become Atacadão, the French group’s cash and carry brand. The National flag will be kept, due to regional strength and proximity to the public.

The purchase of Grupo Big by Carrefour was approved in May. However, the analysis took more than a year. In the South Region alone, the negotiation involved 133 markets.
